About the project

As sustainability advocates, we strive to retain and re-use existing structures wherever possible, minimizing embodied carbon and waste. This approach is particularly relevant when dealing with homes of architectural merit, such as those constructed in the 1860s, which once supported a vibrant community.

The original Millfield Cottages were designed to house workers from the nearby spinning and weaving mills. Their compact layout earned the cul-de-sac the affectionate nickname “The Village.” Over time, the area faced repeated flooding and increasing dereliction, leading to the last resident vacating the cottages by 2013. Despite their historical merit, the extensive damage and the necessity of significantly raised floor levels to address future flood risks made preservation impossible.

The new Millfield Cottages reimagines the original charm and character of the site through thoughtful design and sustainable innovation. The development consists of 18 two-bedroom homes arranged in three blocks around a pedestrian courtyard, creating a street-like ambiance. A fabric-first approach underpins the scheme’s sustainability, incorporating heat pumps for space and water heating, underfloor heating on the ground floor, and open-plan layouts that maximize dual-aspect glazing for passive solar gain. Airtight construction and natural ventilation enhance energy efficiency, while onsite bicycle storage and proximity to Blackpool village and public transport encourage active and sustainable modes of transport.

High-quality materials and meticulous detailing ensure the scheme complies with modern national guidelines while reflecting the historic essence of the site. Pre-coloured renders, precise finishes, and careful landscaping contribute to a cohesive and enduring design.

Handover to the Respond housing body occurred in early 2024,with residents moving in soon after. Millfield Cottages exemplifies high-density, own-door urban housing that balances sustainability, practicality, and a strong sense of community. The project showcases the valueof meticulous detailing, premium materials, and collaboration between a quality orientated client and a contractor dedicated to delivering exceptional homes.
